ThymeTurf is a turf-like groundcover system grown using ‘Magic Carpet’ Thymus serpyllum, a hardy creeping thyme known for its vibrant purple-lilac flowers and aromatic foliage. During summer bloom, ThymeTurf produces dense clusters of flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding ecological value to ornamental landscapes.

The product is grown in a specialized mat format that allows designers and contractors to install thyme as a finished groundcover rather than individual plugs, simplifying installation while delivering immediate visual impact.

When ThymeTurf
Is the Right Choice

  • A project requires low-maintenance flowering groundcover
  • Designers want to vegetate joints between pavers or flagstone
  • Landscapes require pollinator-friendly planting
  • The site receives full sun to partial sun exposure
  • A project needs instant groundcover rather than slow plug establishment

ThymeTurf delivers a durable planting system that integrates naturally with hardscape designs.

ThymeTurf is grown as a dense planting of ‘Magic Carpet’ creeping thyme within a soil-less growing medium supported by a biodegradable fibre base. Unlike planting individual thyme plugs, the plants are established together during production as a cohesive vegetated mat.

This allows the product to be handled, transported, and installed as a stable planting unit without disturbing the plants.

Once installed, the thyme quickly roots into the underlying soil while the fibre base gradually biodegrades, allowing the planting to integrate naturally with the surrounding landscape. Immediate flowering groundcover is achieved at installation, supporting rapid establishment and long-term low-maintenance performance.

Common
applications
include:

  • Planting between flagstone and pavers
  • Softening edges of hardscape patios and pathways
  • Pollinator-friendly garden designs
  • Rock gardens and sun-exposed landscapes
  • Low-maintenance residential and commercial landscapes

Shipping

  • ThymeTurf units measure 27 cm × 53 cm (approximately 1.5 sq ft) and are approximately 35–40 mm thick.
  • Units are stacked on 48″ × 48″ pallets for efficient transport and handling.
  • Each pallet typically contains 160 ThymeTurf pieces, equaling approximately 240 sq ft of coverage per pallet.
  • The fibre base and growing medium help maintain patch stability during shipping and on-site handling.
  • Delivery is coordinated with project installation schedules during the growing season.

Installation

  • ThymeTurf performs best in full sun to partial sun locations.
  • Thyme is adaptable to soil conditions and can be planted in existing garden soil, loam, or screened topsoil.
  • Remove visible weeds and lightly wet the soil prior to installation.
  • Apply a balanced organic fertilizer before planting.
  • Install pieces as continuous coverage or spaced planting. Once rooted, thyme will spread to fill gaps.
  • Water deeply after installation and then every 2–3 days until plants have rooted into the soil.

Maintenance

  • After establishment, water occasionally during drought conditions.
  • A deep watering in fall and again in early spring can support plant health.
  • If desired, apply a balanced controlled-release fertilizer in spring.
  • Bi-weekly weeding is recommended, especially during early establishment.
  • Broadleaf herbicides should never be used on ThymeTurf.
  • ThymeTurf tolerates occasional foot traffic, but it should not be used in areas with regular heavy traffic.
