Some green roofs are about practical and responsible building practices.Others also include expression.The green roof on the Radio Park amenity building was conceived as a design-forward landscape centerpiece, one that treats the roof beyond its obvious utility and converts it directly into a canvas.
With nearly two years of planning and refinement, the design team developed a planting concept built around a moustache motif, a bold, intentional pattern achieved through careful control of plant colour, texture, and height. Reds, yellows, and greens were expressed using proprietary sedum blends grown outdoors at our nursery, ensuring density and colour accuracy prior to installation. These were layered with a mix of native grasses and select non-native alliums to introduce vertical structure and the “bushiness” that gives the moustache its character.
Delivering that vision on a convex roof with slopes reaching 33 degrees required more than plant selection alone. More than 6,000 pre-grown LiveRoof® modules were installed on a structural retention system and laid out with precision to translate the pattern across complex geometry, without compromising long-term performance.
The installation, completed by the Flynn Group of Companies professional roofing team, is a testament to the level of coordination required when design ambition, growing methodology, and construction execution are fully aligned.From a design perspective, this project stands among the most adventurous green roofs in North America not because of scale alone, but because of the confidence to treat planting as both infrastructure and creative expression.
