In October 2021, a very special project was completed for the Arthur N.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Sometimes referred to as the Calgary Cancer Centre, this facility now provides hope through advanced cancer treatments and therapies for patients.
Designed by DIALOG and installed by the LiveRoof Global, LLC Certified installer PEDDIE ROOFING & WATERPROOFING LTD, a 25,000 sq. ft. mixed-depth green roof was created using LiveRoof modules to form an expansive, fully vegetated green roof visible from patient rooms. This type of project has been growing in popularity as research increasingly shows that well-being is enhanced by connections to and views of nature.
The LiveRoof modules on this project not only served as the green roof, but also provided ballast for an inverted roofing assembly. Once the inverted roof was completed, it was essential to ballast it. While this could have been a significant challenge with a planted-in-place green roof, it was no issue for the fully vegetated LiveRoof modules.
In addition to the expansive extensive green roof, two rooftop amenity spaces were created using Roofstone™ pavers and mixed depth LiveRoof modules to create a diverse perennial semi-Intensive green roof. These amenity spaces allow staff and patients to visit the areas, take in the views and enjoy a moment while surrounded by abundant vegetation. This further enhanced the functionality of what would otherwise have been an unusable space.
