DirtBags
Biodegradable planting units for erosion control and vegetation establishment
Download Product Spec Sheet >

DirtBags are a simple but highly effective solution for supporting vegetation establishment in areas where soil conditions have been compromised or lost.

Each DirtBag is a biodegradable jute bag filled with soil-less growing media and site-specific native seed, designed to provide both immediate erosion control and a growing environment for vegetation.

By combining structure, media, and seed into a single unit, DirtBags help rebuild the conditions required for plants to establish, particularly in riparian zones, stormwater systems, and eroded landscapes.

When DirtBags
Are the Right Choice

DirtBags are ideal when:

  • Sites have lost topsoil and cannot support vegetation naturally
  • Projects require immediate erosion control with long-term vegetation goals
  • Areas are difficult to access with machinery or heavy equipment
  • Slopes or channels are prone to water scour and instability
  • Restoration plans require integration with live stakes or planting systems

They are most effective where both structure and growing medium are missing.

Built for Immeditate Function
& Long-Term Establishment

  • DirtBags provide an instant physical layer that helps stabilize soil while simultaneously creating a contained growing environment for seed and plant establishment.
  • The jute fabric offers temporary erosion control, while the internal growing media supports germination and early root development.
  • Over time, the bags biodegrade, leaving behind established vegetation as the primary stabilizing force.

DirtBags combine erosion control, growing medium, and seed into a single biodegradable unit that can be installed directly onto degraded or unstable surfaces. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on existing soil conditions, DirtBags create their own planting environment, allowing vegetation to establish where it otherwise could not.

This allows projects to rebuild lost soil structure while immediately stabilizing the site.

Once installed, the bags support seed germination and root development while gradually biodegrading, transitioning the site from structural support to vegetation-driven stability. The result is a practical and scalable solution for restoring function to difficult landscapes.

Common
applications
include:

  • Riparian zones with eroded or scoured banks
  • Stormwater ponds and drainage channels
  • Steep slopes and hard-to-vegetate areas
  • Areas with poor or non-existent topsoil
  • Companion use with live stakes and bioengineering systems

Shipping

  • DirtBags are shipped on standard pallets (~75 units per pallet) for efficient transport and staging.
  • Each bag weighs approximately 9 kg, allowing for manual handling without equipment.
  • Seeded bags have a ~10-day shelf life to ensure successful germination.
  • Suitable for both small-scale repairs and large restoration projects.
  • Shipping should align with installation timing to preserve seed viability and performance.

Installation

  • Installation is simple and requires no machinery, making it ideal for remote or sensitive sites
  • Bags can be placed edge-to-edge, stacked, or tiered depending on site needs
  • For stability, use 20–30 cm bioengineering stakes in steeper or erosion-prone areas
  • Larger plants can be installed between bags, and plugs can be inserted directly into the bags
  • DirtBags are not intended to function as structural retaining walls

Maintenance

  • Irrigation will accelerate germination and establishment
  • Without irrigation, seed will establish when natural conditions are suitable
  • Bags typically biodegrade within ~3 years, transitioning fully to vegetation-based stability
  • Early-stage monitoring may be required depending on site conditions
  • Over time, vegetation becomes the primary erosion control mechanism
