Native Plants
Locally grown native plants for restoration, reclamation and sustainable landscapes

At EcoLogic Horticulture, we believe one of the most meaningful things we can do is produce healthy native plants. Whether they’re used on a green roof or in a reclamation setting, native plants play an important role in restoring ecological balance.

Once established, native plants produce viable seed that contributes to the seedbank of the future. These species are adapted to our climate and provide critical food and habitat for insects and wildlife. Where possible, we grow plants from locally collected seed, offer seasonal inventory of grasses, forbs, and shrubs, and can custom-produce native plants specifically for your project.

Why Native Plants?

Ecosystem Support

  • Native plants provide a wide range of ecosystem services
  • Support native pollinators and wildlife

Reduced Maintenance

  • Reduced mowing and weed control
  • The site is in a public facing setting and waiting 2-3 years for native seed toestablish is not acceptable.

Naturally Beautiful

  • Thousands of native species to choose from
  • Many have strong landscape and design value

Carbon Sequestration

  • Deep, complex root systems
  • Native grasslands can sequester carbon more effectively than trees

EcoLogic native plants are grown with root development as the priority. Using specialized Air Prune pots and root-training trays, roots are guided downward and naturally pruned at the container edge, preventing spiraling and structural weakness common in conventional containers.

This produces dense, fibrous root systems that hold soil integrity during handling and transplanting.

At installation, roots are already structured to move into surrounding soil rather than continue circling within the original container shape. The result is improved transplant performance, faster establishment, and stronger long-term adaptation to site conditions.

Common
applications
include:

  • Projects where native plants complement seeding for faster, more reliable establishment
  • Low-impact development and sustainable landscapes
  • Municipal parks and naturalization initiatives
  • Reclamation and restoration sites
  • Green roofs and rooftop landscapes

Real World Conditions

The following videos illustrate how locally grown native plants move from nursery production to long-term site establishment.

Formats, Availability & Procurement

EcoLogic works with
designers, contractors,
and municipalities to
align production with
project timelines.

  • We carry an in-season inventory of grasses, forbs, and shrubs as they become available.
  • Where possible, we grow native plants from locally collected seed to better match project regions.
  • We can custom-produce native plants specifically for your project requirements and timelines.
  • Because it takes several seasons to turn locally collected seed into a project-ready plant, contract production is the most effective way to ensure availability when landscaping begins.
  • Contract production helps avoid substitutions, supports matching seed source to site, and can provide order savings (up to 25%) depending on how far in advance orders are placed.

Native Species for Shelterbelts

Native plant species have evolved for life on the prairies and will provide a low maintenance, non-invasive community of plants for your shelter belt. Not only can a shelter belt benefit your agricultural land, but they also provide added support for wildlife and improve the viability for grassland species at risk.

Drought Tolerance is an Adaptation for our Ecoregion

Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia cover a massive and diverse geographic area with many ecoregions and subregions, sometimes called ecodistricts. These areas undergo unimaginable changes on both yearly and multidecade timescales.
